Expiring Links Explained: Why Share Links Should Not Live Forever

Oct 19, 2026 · DropYaar Admin

Most files you share only need to be available for a short time. A proposal is read within days. A photo set is downloaded the same week. Yet many links stay live for years, sitting in old emails and chats. An expiring link fixes that by ending on its own.

What an expiring link is

An expiring link works until a date and time you choose, or until it has been used a set number of times. After that, anyone who opens it sees that the link is no longer available. The file itself can stay in your account, so you can share it again with a fresh link.

Why it helps

  • Less to forget. You do not need to remember to turn the link off.
  • Smaller risk. An old link in a forwarded email cannot open the file months later.
  • Clear intent. The receiver knows the file is for now, so they save it.

Choosing how long

  1. A day or two for sensitive documents and one-time handovers.
  2. A week for client reviews and ordinary project files.
  3. A month or more only for material the receiver may need to come back to.

If you are unsure, pick the shorter one. Creating a new link takes seconds.

Download limits as a second control

A download limit counts uses instead of days. Setting it to one or two is a good fit when the file is meant for a single person. Combine the limit with a password for private files.

Manual switch-off

You can also end a link yourself. Once the receiver says they have the file, turn the link off. Nothing is lost, because the file stays in your account until you delete it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the file get deleted when the link expires?

Not in DropYaar. Only the link stops working. The file stays in your storage until you delete it.

Can the receiver still use the file after expiry?

If they downloaded it earlier, yes, they keep their copy. Expiry controls new downloads.

Can I extend a link?

The simplest way is to create a new share link for the same file.
